Kitchen Chronicles, Days 10-40: The cows are loose, but we have hot water
Ok, so it has been a while. Perhaps it was because I was busy. Regardless, I’m happy to say that we have a functioning kitchen… only a few trim-out tasks are left, although I’m considering the no baseboard or casings look.
So, to update you, the hot water heater was fixed and we were back in business a few days after my last post. Going without the hot water was by far the worst part of this experience. The drywaller finished his gig without a problem, mostly while Pat and I finished laying the floors. I then painted the ceiling and walls, then we sanded and put the first coat on the floors, and then I re-painted the ceiling because… well because I’m anal and proud of it, but still not 100% happy with the ceiling. Let’s leave it at that.
In the middle of the ceiling paint crisis was the KraftMaid cabinet “I hate your company with a passion” fiasco. Essentially, the original shipment cabinets had a lot of damaged pieces, which I was told would be replaced within two weeks. I called to check on the status of my replacements, and was told that it would be, all of a sudden and magically, four weeks. This delayed us quite a bit, and needless to say I’m no longer best friends with the poor soul in the KraftMaid call center. I’m not happy with the local rep either. I did, though, get the ok to have my installer begin the job without having the replacement parts on site, which was helpful… until he called and told me that all of his cows had escaped from his pasture. He apparently moonlights as a farmer. He got his cows rounded up and started the install, so we were good once the “cows came home.”
This past week saw the electrical finished, the plumbing hooked up (I hate plumbing), another round of getting after KraftMaid (some of the replacements were damaged) and the new appliances installed. Props to my friends at Whirlpool for hooking me up with a nice deal on some stainless steel appliances.
So now, we’re slowly moving everything back into the kitchen. Our first feast in the new kitchen was the best tasting spaghetti we’ve ever made. I never thought I would say this, but it was nice to not have to grill.
